About Colette Wright

I was born and raised in England, living in both Lancashire and Yorkshire. These areas exude beautiful countryside with many quaint towns and wonderful tea rooms. I am also fortunate that my parents retired to the Cotswold’s, so on my visits home I am able to visit the beautiful countryside in both the North and South of England and drink plenty of tea!

A Spot of History on Afternoon Tea

The 7th Duchess of Bedford is credited with beginning the tradition of high tea in the early 1840's. Customarily supper was not served until 8:30 or 9:00pm. She often became hungry before meal time, especially during the summer months when supper was served even later. The Duchess would often secretly order a small meal of bread, butter, and other delights, such as tarts, cakes, and biscuits, to be brought to her boudoir.

Much to her surprise, when her secret had been discovered, she was not ridiculed, as she had feared, but in fact her habit was embraced and the concept of a small meal of light foods and perhaps tea before supper, became ever so popular and eventually became known as "afternoon tea". Certainly, the beginning of the well known British tradition of afternoon tea cannot entirely be credited to only one woman, but developed over a period of time, as many cultural customs often do.
